Teamwork studies reinforce using small, focused, co-located teams
At the 2008 PMI Research Conference, Dr. Martin Hoegl provided information from his recent studies on teamwork. The results should come as no surprise: people who work together in small teams perform better than those who work remotely (even if the team is separated by one floor of the same building).

In some cases, smaller teams that are dedicated can be much more effective than larger teams with greater skill sets. In the case of virtual teams (which are becoming more and more the norm in this age of travel constraints and cost savings), certain skill sets are essential for effective teamwork, including the ability to work in conjunction with others, self-leadership, and cultural awareness.
